RESEARCH | Selenium: Fertility and Kidney Disease

The other day one of my feminine cycle & fertility tracking apps, Ovia, tipped me on a curious notion:

I first looked into selenium while researching mineral depletion in women with hormone imbalances but I never considered it in relation to men’s fertility and/or kidney disease in general.

When it comes to “fertility” the first thing that usually enters my mind is my own condition, endometriosis, well known to be one of the leading causes of infertility in women. However, when my husband reminded me that kidney disease is also suspected to lessen his fertility, I was led to wonder about the role that selenium might play in relation to both infertility in men AND its significance with kidney disease.

Upon further investigation, I discovered that low levels of Se can cause various issues such as coronary heart failure and lowered immune system. It is also very common that people with kidney disease are found to have low levels of selenium. We will definitely be asking the Doc about this during our next nephrology checkup. (2-March-2020)
